Camino Santiago Footbridge over Highway A-8

Following the construction of the Highway A-8 (Bilbao - Behobia) in the first half of the 70's of the last century, Camino de Santiago was cut off on the Coast as it reaches Orio. This requires going under the highway, and then climbing a steep slope to the hermitage of San Martín de Tours. The construction of a footbridge would restore the pilgrims’ passage.

The bridge has a span of 82 m., and is elastically fixed-ended by two separate endspans 12.3 and 8.2 m. The box girder is made of a series of rhomboidal sections of equal width (3.5 m) and variable height. On the north side, the highest point of the upper box girder emerges above the pavement, making it necessary to build a console to provide a minimum width of 2 m of the walkway.

The cantilever is set as an extension of the bottom of the box girder.
